I
Shot Andy Warhol (US 1995)
Directed by Mary Harron
Featuring Lili Taylor
|
story: |
In 1968, the master of Pop art, Andy
Warhol was shot by one of his admirers, Valerie Solanas. Based
on a true story, from when Valerie reported herself to the police
after gundown, the past till her deadly rampage.
|
point: |
Valerie is a self-acknowledged lesbian,
and a radical feminist who wrote SCUM declaration that says,
"every man must be wiped off." Challenging and standing
alone in a men's world, she lost her mind. Casting of actors
and actresses who look alike real individuals is hilarious.
Accurate reproduction of the art scene of NY in 60s is a highlight.

The
Watermelon Woman (US 1995)
Directed by Cheryl Dunye
Featuring Cheryl Dunye, Guinevere Turner
|
story: |
Cheryl is young, Black, and lesbian,
working in Philadelphia. She was consumed by a film project:
to make a video about her search for a Black actress from Philly
who appeared in films in the 30s and was known as the Watermelon
Woman. As she's discovering things about her, Cheryl becomes
involved with Diana, who's White. A movie of documentary taste
showing the process of film making.
|
point: |
Cheryl has triple handicap as minority;
black, woman, and lesbian. The theme seems serious but given
with hip hop music and humorous conversation among gay men and
black men, the movie is lighter and funny. Fluctuation between
real and unreal is interesting, in Cheryl overlapping the director,
the Watermelon Woman realized to existing person, Fae.
