The
Children's Hour (US 1961)
Directed by William Wyler
Featured Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine
|
story: |
Karen and Martha are best friends
and together running a private school for young girls. Karen
got engaged to Doctor Joe after 2 years relationship with him.
However, by one spiteful student, the two were accused of having
a lesbian relationship.
The two women were left out, and the school was in danger of
closing. The original piece is a play by Lillian Hellman.
|
point: |
A remake of These Three (1936) by
William Wyler. He, after 25 years, developed a theme, lesbian
relationship, in this film, where the trend can be seen at that
time. Misperception, prejudice and group psychology were mixed
and drove one's life to distraction. In such description, the
director is speaking of not only sexuality but also the freakiness
of human mind. The scene Martha told her love to Karen at the
end of the movie is teary. A great director and two movie gueens
are in one masterwork, a classic to know the trend of lesbian
movie.

The
Group (US 1966)
Directed by Sidney Lumet
Featured Candice Bergen, Shirley Knight
|
story: |
At the time of world crisis,
8 young women graduated from a private girl's school in the
East. 7 years from Kay's marriage to her funeral are showed
with episodes of each member in cruel fact of life. The original
author is Mary McCarthy.
|
point: |
There is one stylish lesbian,
Lakey, among 8 girls. Each member accepts Lakey as how she is,
on the other hand, boys around them react contrastively. Girls
are rival rebelling each other, fighting over, but getting together
when someone is in trouble. Girls strong friendship is pictured
in this movie. At the final phase, the word Lakey cast toward
Kay's husband who is not crying for her death sweeps aside the
dark atmosphere.
