Sakura
no sono/The Cherry Orchard (Japan
1990)
Directed by Shun Nakahara
Featuring Hiroko Nakajima, Yasuyo Shiratori, Miho Tsumiki
|
story: |
An all girls high school traditionally
celebrates its anniversary by staging Chekov's play, but this
year the faculty may cancel the play because Noriko, a senior,
was seen smoking. Yuko has permed her hair, Chiyoko, the leading
roll of the play, is edgy after rehearsal, and Noriko is a troublemaker.
This movie depictures girls in a toss before the play. Original
is a comic by Akimi Yoshida.
|
point: |
Triangular relation among girls;
Noriko admires Yuko and Yuko is in love with Chiyoko. The scene
when Yuko tells her feeling toward Chiyoko is very romantic.
Girls purity is one of themes of this movie. Resolving Sakura
(Cherry Blossom) is symbolizing girls pure and fragile youthful
days, that will end before long. Not only the movie itself but
leading girls received many award in Japan.

Henry
& June (US 1990)
Directed by Philip Kaufman
Featuring Uma Thurman, Maria de Medeiros
|
story: |
In 1931 Paris, Anais Nin meets Henry
Miller, a nameless writer and fell in love with him. Then she
met his wife June who followed Miller to Paris, and feel drawn
to her too. A reminiscences of 3 real persons, Henry Miller,
the author of "Tropic of Cancer," and his wife June,
and Anais Nin
|
point: |
A mysterious triangular love of a
literary world. Depiction of Anais Nin's wavery feeling between
Henry and June is fantastic. Anais experiences the reinless
love in relationships with both of them and changes herself.
June, free and strong woman who gave an much effect to Henry
and Anais, is very interesting. To see a boheme lifestyle and
Paris at that time is fun too.
